You can make homemade toys or can buy toys from pet stores. The homemade toys can be anything like toilet paper rolls, card board boxes, small ladders and the branches of apple trees. Before putting any toy, homemade or bought, examine it for sharp edges or anything that might hurt your hamster.

Your hamster is likely to chew on anything that is put into your hamster’s cage. Avoid colored card board painted wood and other things that might harm your hamster. Also check things for toxic things and other chemicals. If you have something, and you are not sure if your hamster can eat it, stick to the store bought things. Below are some ideas for homemade hamster toys. 

Materials you can use:

  • Paper bags
  • Card board boxes
  • Wrapping paper rolls
  • Egg cartons
  • Apple tree branches
  • Anything that is not toxic or has harmful chemicals in it

Ideas

  • On the end of a string tie a clothes pin. Then clip a piece of hamster food to the end of the pin. Hang the string on the top of the hamster’s cage. The hamster will have fun trying to get the food down.
  • Stick some toilet paper rolls in the cage. The card board will be good for his teeth. You can even make a maze out of them.
  • Get some empty card board boxes and cut some holes in them. They will make good nesting boxes.
  • Stick some card board boxes together, making them into a climbing tower for your hamster.
  • Take some card boards strips and fit them into the bars of your hamster's cage, making different put stories in your hamster's cage. Between the shelf's smaller strips of card board to make ramps for your hamster. With the ramp, take a pair of scissors and make slits in the card board to make it easier for your hamster to climb. Lastly, put some fresh food that is OK for hamsters to eat. on the shelf's. Make sure to change the food every day.
  • Take a little branch of an apple tree and put it in your hamster's cage. The hamster can chew on the apple branch. Apple tree branches are an excellent way to keep your hamster's teeth low and not over- grown. WARNING! Do not use apple tree branches that have been treated with any chemical!
