Environment Unit

Throughout the environment unit we will be using the environment as a basis to practice reading, writing, speaking, and listening. We will be using free-verse poetry, interviews, fables, a novel, and nonfiction. We plan to spend about one month on each of the five topics (deserts, cities, tropics, plants, and rain forests).

 

Standards

We will be addressing the following standards throughout the unit:

Social and Instructional Language - Assignments/Research, Character development, instructions, resources and supplies, school behavior, social interaction, use of information, use of multiple resources, use of register

RWSL 1.1.H Demonstrate fluency and comprehension in reading; read a variety of genres and types of text (recommended: 25 books/year)

1.3.A Read and understand works of litearture
1.3.B Compare / analyze the use of literary elements by an author (characterization, setting, plot, theme, point of view, tone, and style)
1.6.A Listen to others; ask probing questions; take notes when prompted/needed
1.6.C Speak using skills appropriate to formal speech situations (complete sentences, correct pronunciation, appropriate volume, understandable pace
1.6.D Contribute to discussions (ask relevant question, respond with relevant information or opinions to questions asked, listen to and acknowledge the contributions of others, adjust involvement to encourage equitable participation, give reasons for opinions, summarize - when prompted)
