Reading Application Activities

In our reading group we are applying decoding and encoding skills, learned in the first half of the year, and applying it to reading the type of text the students are using in project time. Both 5/6 grade teams are working on the Medical School Project and are being introduced to a lot of new vocabulary as they read about the different body systems. The students are developing vocabulary practice games, to learn and understand new words. We are currently supplementing project reading, on the cardiovascular system, in class and learning what to do with the information they are learning. They are learning how to fill out an organizer of important information, as they read paragraph by paragraph, how to answer multiple choice questions, yes, no and why questions, short answer and writing paragraphs using the appropriate vocabulary for that system. To incorporate the "hands on" application of skills and assess their knowledge of skills, we are going to be building a 3-D model of the heart to be displayed in their home teams.
